A famous example of the common portrayal of crows as a symbol of eerie situations is Allen Poe’s poem called “The Raven”. In literature, crows have usually been an ominous figure, known for death and making situations worse, for example in many movies when an individual is going into a dangerous or ominous area, the audience is sometimes shown crows, ravens and vultures flying above the scene cawing. The author, Jessica Johns changes the perception of crows by using normal literature norms of crows being sinful but then later ties it back to them being helpful and a sign of intelligence. Although the perspective of individuals towards crows is primarily negative in many Indigenous cultures, the crow is seen as cunning and intelligent and considered to be an old spirit carrying with it knowledge from past lifetimes. It is known for its adaptivity, teamwork, transformation, and psychic abilities. The change in perception results in a change of analogy of the crows, they go from being symbols of death to a more optimistic approach of intelligence and knowledge.
